Laser Surgery Cost Analysis

Laser surgery is an option available for many corrective and major medical procedures.  It is less invasive, requires less recovery time and typically leaves fewer scars than regular surgical procedures.  Laser surgery costs vary depending on the procedures performed.  Some medically-required surgeries are covered by insurance, and whereas some elective procedures must be paid out of pocket.

Laser surgery cost for laser eye surgery can range from $1500 per eye to as much as $2500 per eye.  This depends on the type of laser technology used for the procedure.  Some surgeons use computer-guided lasers to make the initial flap incision for the procedure, whereas others used hand-guided instruments that are potentially less accurate.  Patients typically pay more for laser-guided laser procedures.  Surgeons with more experience may also charge more for procedures because they feel that their experience warrants an added charge.  Because laser eye surgery is still considered an elective procedure, it is not usually covered by insurance plans.  However, depending on your line of work, some employers offer plans to supplement payment.  Some branches of the military offer the procedure cost-free to their employees.

The laser surgery cost for laser skin resurfacing procedures also varies depending on the scope of the procedure.  The location and the area of the skin being treated plays an important role in determining the cost of the surgery. Because skin resurfacing is considered an elective surgery, it is rare that insurance companies will pay for the procedure.  Sometimes exceptions are made in cases of special medical need.  The average cost of laser skin surgery in the United States is approximately $2,300.  This fee includes anesthesia, facility costs, doctor’s fees, dressings and ointments, but it does not include prescription drugs that may be required prior to and after the surgery to prevent infection of the skin.
