What is Yag Laser Surgery?
Yag laser surgery is a type of laser surgery used to variety of ailments.
These range from sun-damaged or aged skin to eye problems. Yag lasers
gently break through the skin’s surface, and the heat is scattered and
easily absorbed in fluids of the tissue. This allows doctors to remove
thin layers of skin while leaving the surrounding healthy skin untouched.
Yag lasers are often used to remove fine lines and wrinkles in the skin.
These can be caused by sun damage or by the regular aging process. These
lasers can also be used to remove scars, varicose veins or skin discolorations.
Yag laser surgery is also used to treat post-cataract surgery patients who have
experienced growth of a cloudy membrane behind the replacement lens that was
put in place during the original cataract removal surgery. This procedure
is virtually painless, and patients typically regain their vision within a few
days. Complications are very rare when yag lasers are used for this treatment.
In addition to these uses, Yag laser surgery is used to remove port-wine stains
on the skin, and for laser hair removal. They are used to treat acne scarring,
and in some cases, yag lasers can aid in the removal of small tumors.
Yag lasers are also used in the treatment of severe glaucoma. During this
yag laser surgery, the laser is aimed at the part of the eye that is responsible
for producing intraocular fluid. This destroys this part of the eye, thus
reducing the pressure in the eyeball. The eye is numbed with a local anesthesia
during surgery, so there is little or no pain involved. In some cases,
medication may still be needed to control glaucoma, the surgery can lessen the
amount of medicine needed to control the pressure in the eye.
